Chapter 8x - Dagdar's Manor

Resets: 0 (15)
Turns: 18 (155)

Deploy: Leif, Nanna, Karin, Asbel, Lithis, Osian

Gomez started a coup against Dagdar because the mountains of Southern Thracia are inhospitable to people and not sustainable for growing crops, leaving villages to suffer and be forced into banditry or mercenary work to survive. Gomez resents Dagdar for following Eyval to Fiana and leaving behind the village, so much so that he is willing to kill and take over command the group.

This is a dark map with narrow corridors, making it pretty annoying to traverse through. Dagdar and Tanya start in the center of the map with a sizable group of enemies in front of them. There are a lot of ranged enemies so I brought a few characters who have decent ranged attack to help get through the map.

For the most part, I let Dagdar take care of the enemies in the center, as he can handle them without too much of an issue. I split up my team into two groups of three, as the narrow one-space corridors make it difficult to have everyone go one direction.

There is a bit of danger for me near the top end of the map as there is a large number of enemies with ranged attacks hiding in the top left corner of the map, and Osian just erased them all with the Vogue. But it also meant he had to dodge about 5 or 6 attacks otherwise he could have died.

Aside from that, the map isn't too eventful. Gomez is very strong, but since he starts off equipped with an Axe, we can beat him easily by attacking him with Asbel, then rescuing to safety. I take a bit of an unnecessary risk going for the kill, thinking that my accuracy was better than it was, but we landed both the 45 and the 40, so he was taken out.

I mismanaged inventory a bit, and forgot to bring one of my chest key, because I forgot that there were a lot more treasure boxes than I thought on the map. So I needed to wait around a good extra 5 turns or so as Lithis went around collecting items. Given that the items in the boxes contain such things as the Wrath skill manual and the Leg Ring, they are definitely worth the time to pick up. I immediately give Asbel the Leg Ring. And we are on our way.

Leif wonders why Gomez needed to resort as far as trying to kill Dagdar, and is lectured about a harsh truth about the area by Augustus. Southern Thracia is notorious as a belligerent nation that is very militant and will take on mercenary work, no matter how dirty, if they are paid sufficiently for their efforts. The reason is that the land is largely made of mountain ranges and hard rocky terrain that is unsuitable for farming. The need to survive forces the entire nation to do what it can to survive, and for the most part, that means literally fighting for their life. Thracia used to be a unified nation between the north and south, but due to a war a century ago, tied to legends regarding Njorun and her spear, the Gae Bolg, where Munster became independant of Southern Thracia, the land became divided. Those who lived in the north lived well and privileged while the south starved, and they created policies to bar trade with the South, forcing further hardships upon them. This also led to a string of generations of leaders of Munster who acted intentionally antagonistic to their southern neighbors while indulging in luxuries taken for granted. Augustus tells Leif, that if he wishes to lead, he would do well to learn of the past and not repeat the mistakes of his ancestors.

While Dagar's stat growths are bad IIRC, his stats are quite a bit better than most of my other characters, making it low risk for him to be in front of enemies or be used to attempt captures, so he'll likely still see some action for a bit before I choose to bench him.
