Chapter 3- Mutiny in the Mist

Monastery Exploration

The Battalion guild opens up this chapter so the first order of business in the new month is to spend to get battalions for everyone. This basically expends all the funding I had for the month in addition to the 5000G bullion from Zanado.

Annette learned Heal and Mercedes learned a couple more attacking spells along with Physic, allowing both my magic users to extend their services during the upcoming battles.

I got a good crop from the greenhouse that gave me about 10 assorted flowers, which helped me advance on my support needs for recruitment, as well as keep my motivation levels managed to best optimize my lesson plans.

During the month, I did one auxiliary battle, in order to help top off a few characters levels. This allowed me to hit level 5 with Rikka, Dimitri, and Annette.

Battle: The Magdred Ambush

This is a fog chapter, so given that I can't see the enemies at the start of the map there isn't too much to say about battle preparations. I have a general idea of where the enemies are on the map but nothing super specific. I purchase a few torches and a few steels then start the map.

I start the map by using Stride and throwing out a few torches to see what I'm dealing with. The enemies are a bit slower than in the previous map with the bow and axe users mostly have 8AS so the risk of being 2x hit is off the table for the most part, but there's a lot more of them than I am expecting.

In order to ensure that the church soldiers survive, I find that I need to strike a balance between playing the map aggressively, and playing the map conservatively. I use Divine Pulse to start the map over from the beginning twice trying to handle the early part of the map. The first time due to stepping too far forward which caused a few too many enemies to mobilize. I sit there for a good few minutes with about 6 or 7 enemies on me before coming to the conclusion that I'm pretty likely dead. The second time because I tried to take things slower and moved most of my units to the north, only to find that the church soldiers will quickly become overwhelmed and be impossible to save from their own destruction.

What I ended up doing was that I would light a torch and use stride to start, then move a few of my units in to take out the myrmidon directly in front of Catherine an the remainder of move north-west. I light a second torch and keep outside of the range of the visible enemies. My units that headed directly west to take out the myrmidon were targeted by the archers and other myrmidons in the area to keep the church soldiers healthy, and I was able to create a situation where there was a more manageable number of enemies around me.

Annette ends up being very helpful with handling the enemies with the southern forest area as she could do a sizable amount of damage with her spells and 2HKO them without much worry about missing. Having a number of units that have access to Tempest Lance also played a role in this chapter to help take out the enemy Mercenaries without taking up too many of my units actions. The map became a lot less stressful after dealing with the initial encirclement of enemies. There were some instances of worry where an unexpected enemy could have made things difficult, but fortunately nothing happened in a way that was threatening. Once I reached the dark mage commander in the center of the map, he was kind enough to step outside of the 40% evade thicket so I could end his career and lift the fog.

Once the fog was lifted, there were only a small handful of enemies left. I intentionally left enemies around in order to slow Catherine down from running past me and killing everything on the way to Lonato, while I used a second Stride to get ahead. I was able to use the movement boost to flatten the enemy line without worrying about any of their gambits. Lonato doesn't and starts equipped with a range 1 weapon, so once I reached up to him it was simply a matter of poking him with a bunch of attacks before finishing him off with a Training Lance Knightkeeler from Sylvain. Lonato is down, and I managed to keep both Church Soldiers alive, getting me the Secret Book and Goddess Icon. Keeping the soldiers alive was a lot easier after the first part of the map because eventually they'd just spend the rest of the map trying to walk and catch up to Catherine and my own units, so they weren't in any danger, even if one of them was left at 2HP for 2/3s of the duration of map.
